safari soiree

It's all, well the majority of the time all fun and games in the shop space.

vintage space

We have a men's 1970's safari two piece suit for hire.

The mid century island painting is the original not a print and would make a perfect addition to a tiki inspired home.

The 1960s faux fur leopard go go dress is for sale but only if I like you because I have a secret crush on it!

Unfortunately the pith helmet sold to what I thought was a nice old man who turned out to be a closed minded racist after he had paid and had the hat in a his possession.

If I wasn't so tired I would be doing a happy dance right about now. Thank you to all my fabulous customers who have made this new chapter a colourful one.

get your vintage on

A last minute banner design for my facebook event page. Time to get my vintage market hat on and decide what is coming to this huge,  300+ stallholder fair.

Ugly 1980's/90's  jumpers and shirts are all the rage here in little, young Perth. Either way,  there will be plenty of vintage variety to please the young,  the old and the immortal souls of my hometown.

A flyer with real information about the event!  Check out the Polka Dot Vintage Market Perth facebook page for details!

vintage wall art

Living with someone that has different aesthetics to you can be frustrating for both parties involved. As a vintage dealer, I often have to pass on treasures that I would prefer to keep. Typically vintage furniture and wall art are the topic of such discussions.

These captive bluebirds are not allowed to fly on our walls. Maybe, one day they will be free.

This kitsch panther adorned our wall for a few months before it had to find another home.

mid century copper abstract relief

I found this mid century copper relief yesterday but promised I would sell it on! I guess the positive aspect is that my walls are an ever changing canvas.

Think Again

An amusing reflection of 1970's tobacco advertising, care of the Stanford School of Medicine.

Angry Man, 1975. Okay, you smoke. I had no plans to ask why you choose to do so. Oh yeah, while we are on the subject, I don't want to know why you smoke Winston Longs either.

The lady looks so proud that these cigarettes were designed for her slimline design!

Vintage Dining

Today we had a sad farewell to our bright kitchen dining table. Unfortunately, we had grown too big for our bright green 1970s dining companion. Many a happy memory was had at this table.

1970s kichen table and Sebel chairs

I do love this bold colour combination. The 1970s Sebel tulip chairs will still have a place within our home until our Hans Wegner original wishbone chairs have been restored. We are currently replacing our laminated vintage furniture with quality vintage wooden furniture.

Here is a close up of the fabulous hardwood detail underneath the table. The metal hardware is uniform, so I assume the whole table construction happened at one time.

I am sure the new owner of this 1970s table will be just as happy as we were.

Mid-Century Copper Art

Currently, I have this vintage, mid-century hammered copper wall art, for sale.

The stylised ram, sculptural piece measures 91.5 x 56 cm. It is a quality heavy piece, signed 'Glover'.

It does have patina, light verdigris due to its age. On close inspection it reflects many colours of the spectrum.

1970s Copper Wall Art

I do admire the boldness and brutality of the hammered technique and design. The stylised ram is reminiscent of neolithic art.

The earthenware beaker below is from the neolithic period c 5000 - 4000 B.C.E.

Earthenware beaker c 5000-4000bce 11 1/4" from Susa. The Louvre, Paris.

Whilst learning about neolithic art in art history classes. I was blown away with the richness of their intellectual and artistic pursuits within the neolithic cultural heritage.

Collectors of this copper art style are attracted to the works of Curtis Jeré. The name is a compound nom-de-plume of artists Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels. The two founders combined pieces of their own names to create the C. Jeré signature. An example below is a 1977 piece titled Firmament.

Which Vintage Era Floats Your Boat?

I love this photo of morphing styles through the decades.

Personally, I feel most comfortable in the mid 60's, as the last picture shows. Although I do admire how graceful the 1950s shape is and feel with the passing of time it is a more pleasing look in hindsight. How do you feel?

Which era floats your boat?

Halloween Vintage Styley

Love this 1972 Halloween costume. What a pair!

   Feline friends.

This photo has to be my favourite. You must admit he has the most fascinating demeanor in such a costume.

Very cute, not sure how practical it was to walk in!

1960s G-Plan Coffee Table Nest

I love my new vintage treasure, found at the local Salvos shop on the way home from work.

So modern and sleek in style and function.

This fabulous long nest of tables were originally part of the Fresco range by G-Plan, introduced in 1966. The Fresco range was made from teak wood with organic curved lines. It was G-Plan's most successful range and remained in production for many years.

The table tops are veneered in a straight grained, orange toned teak with the edges finished in solid teak. The tables are supported on solid teak end stands which  have curved edges.

Here is the good news. G-Plan have relaunched Fresco for a new generation. Some changes have been made from the original designs yet still in character with their fluid modern style and use of quality teak wood.

For more information and photos, visit their site  http://www.gplancabinets.co.uk/search/?range_id=10

Their sideboard and wall mirror are on my wishlist. I just need to move to the UK first!

Retro Photo Effects

There are many free sites online where one can create vintage effects and be very creative to your photographs.

Here is my first example. A photo of my 4 year old's first day home from kindergarten. Just a little excited and proud of herself and her macaroni necklace!

Original photograph 2012

Using http://pixlr.com/o-matic/, they have many vintage effect available. I used the 'Doug' vintage effect for a subtle change.

Vintage 'Doug' Effect 2012

http://www.instantretro.com/ is a very easy site to use.  You just need to make sure you reset every time you want to try a new effect. Otherwise they will layer and you will loose the quality.

Ava Rose 21012 Original

There are so many options at Instant Retro. I used the 'Glowing Sun' with a Roll Effect. Funnily enough, Ava Rose is wearing a 1970s dancing costume and sitting in front of a 1970s table lamp!

Poncho madness

Yay, the cooler weather is here for us in Australia. The cardigans are out and I have gone poncho crazy.

In the 1990s, I designed a simple South American style poncho that was reversible and made from vintage fabrics. They sold like hot cakes and I have worn the one I made for myself every winter since. On the look out for a replacement poncho I was ever so happy to find this beauty.

1960s Poncho from Blue Bird Vintage

Purchased from the Vintage Vixen and Vamp Fair from the lovely Deb of Blue Bird Vintage.

So it is back to the designing table for me as I am to adapt my original poncho design to a shorter style. Oh the possibilities. Hopefully you will see my new designs soon.

Here is a sweet vintage poncho/cape I have for sale in my shop.

Details include a button front, pom-poms, collar, cable knit front and a fringe trim. Lovely light cornflower blue colour. Label - made in Mexico. In excellent vintage condition, looks as new. Made of super soft thick acrylic yarn.

Vintage Children's Book Records

This is my children's collection of vintage book records. My husband was very clever as to rip the vinyl 45s onto one CD disc. This way there are no scratched records or assistance needed by the young ones with a turntable. The truth is, we have expensive DJ turntables the children are not allowed to touch! The recording also captures the static, crackling, old record sound.

The earliest record book we own is the Saggy Baggy Elephant, a Little Golden Book & Record. MCMXLVII, 1947. I did have to renew my roman numeracy skills, I must admit!

Here is a vintage 1970s Fisher Price Children's turntable. I remember being envious of the family across the road who owned a Fisher Price turntable.

Maybe you too are old enough to feel nostalgia for vintage record books!
